Celebration Season

by Elizabeth Cooper in Wine & Beer

512-3460It is celebration season: Mardi Gras, Saint Patrick’s Day, NCAA Tournament, Passover and Easter—this is definitely a busy time of year, and when we celebrate, well, we need to toast the event with the appropriate beverage. There are beverages for any and every occasion and ones that match any taste or style preference. Of course with Mardi Gras, I’m sure many of you indulged in the random Hurricane or Sazerac, but did you try the Abita Mardi Gras Bock? It’s the first of their seasonal brews, a pale pilsner with caramel malts and German Perle hops. Similar to a Maibock, the flavor is rich and full-bodied, but at 6.5 ABV and only 25 IBUs, it is balanced and seamless—the perfect choice for Carnival season.

St. Patrick’s Day is certainly a beer-centric time with lots of available Irish ales, but think outside the box here, it’s the beginning of spring, so why not a lovely Vinho Verde? It covers your green with the name, but it is light and refreshing and not so high in alcohol, so you can make for the long haul celebration. One of our favorites is Ouro Vinho Verde from the Minho region of northern Portugal. Caves da Cerca is one of the principal crafters of these delightful wines. Almost clear in color, the wine has lemon zest and herbs on the nose. Clean, light citrus flavors introduce themselves on the palate, along with a slight spritz to tickle the tongue and a refreshing tartness to take over on the close. It’s a splendid choice for hot spring day, so why not unscrew a bottle for your St. Paddy’s Day Parade!
