'Black' is a new blend produced from classic varieties that do not make it into the Quinta do Noval vintage. There are ripe blackberries, tar, smoke and orange liqueur on the nose that takes time to open. The palate is medium-bodied, very sleek on the entry, fleshy black fruits, sloe, spice and just a hint of white pepper, leading to a very focused finish. Drink now-2020. Tasted April 2010. (NM-Wine Journal) (11/2010)
Ruby reserve in style, with an average age of 2-3 years old. Aimed at younger consumers, as the flashy website attests! Fruity, jammy, figs and dates. Sweet and supple, with a glacé cherry flavour and a simple, satisfying style. (8/2010)
A reserve style of Port, with a fine perfumed character, with damson skins and stalky black berries. The style is soft, not noticeably sweet, with a definite dry center. It suffers from a bitter sweetness. (8/2010)
Shows beautiful aromas of sliced plum and peach, with raspberry jam. Medium-bodied and lightly sweet, with fine tannins and a fruity finish. Refined and pretty. This is a new Port from Noval that is supposed to attract new consumers and please old ones. Might work. (5/2010)
This is a revolutionary new port from one of the world's legendary estates. Thanks to 15 years of work, replanting and rebuilding, the quality of fruit across the estate is unprecedented. This fruit is now the foundation for the Vintage Ports and, in other years, for Black. For this unique Port, all grapes harvested are crushed by foot in granite lagares and crushing is done in small lots for better control and to pinpoint quality. This effort allows Quinta do Noval to create a port wine that wholly emphasizes fruit with a focus on tremendous aromatics, beautiful balance, and transparent complexity. Enjoy now, no decanting or other stuffy, stodgy dramatics necessary!
