Whilst the quality of winemaking in the classic regions of France has undoubtedly improved over the last 20 years, it is in the less famous regions that the biggest changes have occurred. Poor wine destined for EU subsidised distillation is still made, but the quality and variety available at the other end of the scale improves every year. Much of the production is of varietally labelled vin de pays, but the Languedoc is also home to some fine appelations, from the dry and tangy whites of Picpoul de Pinet to the powerful and robust wines of Corbieres.
The producer
Started in 1892 with 9 hectares of vines, by the 50's this had expanded to 120 hectares in Montagnac. Now with fourth generation Jean-Claude in charge, the estate comprises 320 hectares over several appellations along with 800 hectares under contract for a negiociant business. Jean-Claude is widely travelled and although his formal education was in economics, not wine, he learnt on the job, first in Bordeaux, then in Italy and finally from the mid 90's back at the family estates. The range produced here is mind-boggling as is the consistency of quality.
Each varietal is vinified separately. 6-8 hours skin contact then gentlepneumatic pressing. Fermented over 21 days at 18c. Aged in tank for 3 months
Tasting Note
Fresh and fruity with an intriguing blend of green and tropical notes. Quitecreamy on the palate, with a nicely balanced fresh finish.
