Winkeler Jesuitengarten Riesling Spatlese is gloriously perfumed with gardenia and wisteria, pear nectar, pineapples in syrup, and quince preserves. Subtly creamy, its prominent sweetness fits the wines heady florality and confitured sense of ripeness. The degree of botrytis here - whatever it might have been percentage-wise - is entirely noble. For a Riesling so richly-textured, ripe, and residually sweet, there is a surprising sorbet-like sense of soothing refreshment as well as of levity, leading to a finish with hints of salted caramel and marzipan adding allure without elbowing-out the effusive florality or uncanny sense of primary juiciness. The present wines 9 grams of acidity (compared with 8 in its Kabinett halbtrocken counterpart) may hold one clue to its remarkable inner workings. I suspect that this excellent value will continue to give great satisfaction for more than two decades.
